The AFSOAS Boston Chapter is proud to present a special academic event at the Harvard Kennedy School featuring Omar Abdel-Ghaffar (History PhD candidate) who will be giving a presentation on concepts of sovereignty, labor, and land in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean region.
The slave-sultan system which underpinned the Mamluk dynasty for nearly 300 years provides important conceptual frameworks to think of ideas of belonging, loyalty, and power. Abdel-Ghaffar’s presentation will outline the Mamluk regime and continue to describe the main agricultural dimension of the "Circle of Justice," and how the various roles were played out in a pre-capitalist setting.
Meeting Location: Rubenstein R-229, CARR Conference Room, Harvard Kennedy School
